I got him about five years ago. Daniel, my youngest brother, gave him to me for my birthday. He didn't buy the rabbit from the pet store. Rather, his friend, who was going to Portugal with her family for the summer, gave the rabbit to him. Anyway, when Daniel brought him home (crib, food, hay, and all), we were all excited. We'd never really had a pet before (well, if you don't count those gold fish that died two hours after I bought them ^^v) I thought the rabbit, who was originally named Babs, was absolutely cute. Babs -- whose ears hang low and who has funky patterns on his black and white fur -- was smaller then and was a bit aloof. I mean, he liked to curl up in the corner and was quite wary of us. I think he didn't like us petting him then. We were, after all, still strangers. After a while, though, he got familiarized with us and his new surroundings. I named him Usagi later that day.
All of us, even the original owners, thought he was a she. I still remember telling my brothers to leave us alone so we could have a "girl talk" or something :B One Saturday morning, we were proven wrong... By him, if you can imagine it. Well, I'm not going to say here what it was that he did. I don't want to embarass him ^^; But I'm sure you have a good idea. If not, well...
My bunny didn't like to eat carrots then. I guess he was only fed pellets and hay before he was given to Daniel. When I introduced carrots to him, he just snubbed them. So I used the blender, crushed them, and put them into a small bowl. I then placed it where he liked to hide (which was under my bed) and left it there. When I returned, I noticed that he ate some 'cause the fur around his mouth was orange. Days later, when he got used to the taste and to make sure his teeth stayed sharp and clean, I started giving him unblended whole carrots. Other foods he eats are apples, bananas, strawberries, pears, apples, lettuce, Cheerios, et cetera. He doesn't like spinach and cabbage at all ^^;
Usagi is really sweet. You don't believe me? Here's an example: one time, I was washing dishes in the kitchen. Instead of running around the house like he would usually do, he stayed by my side and stayed with me until I finished. Even when Daniel was calling him, he stayed. It seemed as if he was guarding me. Anyway, Usagi also makes himself comfy between my feet or under my desk when I'm at the computer. He's done other sweet things too, like, licking my face or trying to chew my hair or something.
I like talking to my bunny. I know that sounds weird, but I can tell him everything and he just listens. I bet you're thinking, "Duh! Of course, he'd listen! What else can he do? He can't talk!" But that's the beauty of it; I can tell him everything (how my day was or how lousy I was feeling) and he wouldn't say anything... No negative remarks, no judgments, no frowns, nothing. I mean, try doing the same thing to another person and see what happens. And besides, when I do tell him things, he looks at me as if he really understands me. He'd give me a sign like he'd move his ear or something. If you think I'm nuts, then pfffffft to you!
Where was I? Oh yeah, Usagi and I used to get into trouble a lot. You see, I used to let him run around the house even though I knew he liked chewing cables/live wires. Casualties? Brand new answering machine, Playstation controller, and modem cables. Don't worry; he didn't get hurt. He has also chewed a few of my shirts not to mention blankets. Now I only let him loose in the bedroom and only when PJ -- a total party pooper -- is someplace else.
Usagi has toys (a Ziggy plushie and wooden blocks) but he doesn't like playing with them. He also hasn't gone near his saltlick after trying it once. He does amuse himself by playing with his curtain (a piece of cloth I hang in his crib), jumping onto my bed, and getting into tight places (like in the back of cabinets). He's really adorable and I looooove him so much!
