Princess Serenity, heir to the throne of the Silver Millenium, was beautiful, graceful, elegant, and talented. She was loved and respected by everyone not only because of her status, but also because of her gentle nature. She fell in love with Endymion, the Earth Prince, and the feelings were mutual. When an evil sorceress named Beryl invaded the Moon, chaos ensued. Endymion died in vain protecting the Princess who, in turn, did not hesitate to follow him in the afterlife. The Queen, grief-stricken upon witnessing the death of her only daughter and her people used the last of her strength to seal the enemy. She called upon the Maboroshi no Ginzuishou to send her daughter and her court to the future. She died afterwards.

Usagi was clumsy, whiny, and a bit of a crybaby. She wasn't doing very well in school. She became the Senshi of the Moon at the age of fourteen when Luna, a talking black cat, gave her a brooch that would help get rid of monsters. She was accompanied in her quest by Sailors Mercury, Mars, Jupiter, Venus, and the mysterious Tuxedo Kamen. Usagi's past self was revealed when Tuxedo Kamen got injured by that scheming Zoisite and the seven Nijizuishou formed the elusive Ginzuishou. She managed to defeat Beryl and her minions with the help of her friends.

Of course, that was only the end of the first series... there are four more to go.

In the fight against Beryl, Usagi and the others died, but were reborn without their memories as Senshi or as friends. Unfortunately, peace was not to last. Ail and Ann came to Earth hoping to accumulate human energy to feed their Makaiju and themselves. Luna and Artemis, another feline guardian, had no other choice but to revive the Senshi. And they did. Sailor Moon and the others thwarted the aliens' plans again and again. Now that Usagi had her memories back, she happily pursued Mamoru who was really Tuxedo Kamen and Prince Endymion. Unfortunately, he still had not regained his memories. This created complications because he could not transform into his alter persona and fight alongside the Senshi. Unknown to all of them, the Ginzuishou created Tsukikage no Knight to help them fight cardians. In the final confrontation, Moon healed the Makaijuu, Ail, and Ann using her scepter while Mamoru remembered everything that happened in the past. Peace was once again restored.

One day, when Usagi and Mamoru were out on a date, a pink-haired girl literally fell down from the sky and landed on Usagi. She demanded that Usagi give her the Ginzuishou, but Usagi refused. Why wouldn't she? She didn't know the kid (for all she knew, the kid was an enemy) and it was her heirloom. So Chibiusa used her Luna-P, a floating toy that looked remarkably like Luna, to brainwash Usagi's family into thinking that she was a relative. And it worked. So from then on, Chibiusa lived with Usagi. There were constant bickerings between the two, especially when Mamoru was around. Usagi felt that the kid was getting too much of her boyfriend's attention. To make matters worse, the Senshi's new enemies were after her. Though Usagi felt insecured and upset, she protected Chibiusa from harm. (It was later revealed that Chibiusa was really her and Mamoru's child in the future. She came to the past to get help. Apparently, Neo-Queen Serenity, her mother, was under a sleeping spell and Crystal Tokyo, their kingdom, was being attacked). Chibiusa was brainwashed into thinking that nobody cared for her and was then turned into Black Lady by Wiseman, the Death Phantom in disguise. Usagi and the others tried their best to make her see the truth: that even though they fought a lot, they loved her very much. Black Lady finally reverted to Chibiusa and Usagi used the Ginzuishou to transform into her future self. Chibiusa, upon seeing her mother's younger self struggle, used hers (the Ginzuishou of the future that she absorbed into her body) to help vanquish the enemy. When everything was alright again, Usagi bid farewell to her future daughter since the latter was going back to her own time.

The next season introduced Sailors Uranus and Neptune whose mission was to recover the talismans needed to form the Holy Grail. Moon felt that it would be easier if everyone worked worked together, but the others had a different idea. The Inners (Mercury, Mars, Jupiter, and Venus) were suspicious of the Outers (Uranus, Neptune, and eventually Pluto), and the Outers thought the Inners would just get in the way. When the three talismans were found and the Grail was created, Moon became its owner. She also got her second transformation (Super Sailor Moon) and her powers were upgraded. The Outers' next mission was to find the Messiah, the one who can save them from the approaching silence. Chibiusa, who was back from the future and now known as Sailor Chibimoon, befriended a girl named Hotaru. Usagi thought that Hotaru was nice and therefore approved their friendship. When the Outers found out that Hotaru was really Sailor Saturn and that her father was the leader of the evil Witches 5, they tried to destroy her. If it weren't for Moon blocking their attacks, Hotaru would have been seriously hurt. Even though Mistress9, the entity living inside Hotaru, stole Chibiusa's heart crystal, Moon was still intent on changing her back, not only because she was a fellow Senshi, but also because she cared deeply for her. Hotaru eventually turned into Saturn and returned Chibiusa's heart crystal. She also resolved to use her ultimate attack against Pharaoh 90, the main enemy. Moon tried so hard to transform into her Super form, but couldn't since the Grail was destroyed earlier. She eventually transformed when the other Senshi's powers merged with hers. She joined Saturn and finally defeated Pharaoh 90. When she returned, she was carrying baby Hotaru. Uranus and Neptune later challenged Moon and the latter won. It seemed that they only wanted to find out for themselves that she was indeed their Messiah. Even after all that, Usagi's main concern was still Hotaru for she was taken earlier by Uranus and Neptune. They then reassured her that baby Hotaru was safe.
